I have had no problems recently with spark. I have been running the engine without the cover on the box. Today I put the cover on and there is no spark at all. I took a voltmeter and put one lead on the bottom bar of the box and the other to the head and got voltage. So I have no idea as to why the coils are not producing spark. I have had problems with my switch. It has sometimes acted up. The other day I realized the lights weren’t working so there is an issue but since I got voltage between the box and engine I don’t think the light issue bears any relation.
Did the coils start working again when you took the cover back off? If so, look at the fit of the box cover to see if it is interfering with or shorting the coil point assemblies.
No. That is what is so disturbing. When the cover was put on and the starter pushed one coil gave a buzz and silence since. With the cover removed no coils buzz. This leads me to think the problem must be in the switch. I had not used the lights for some time so I thought I would check. Only the low beam worked initially. Now the lights do not work at all so I think the problem must be in the switch. When I was restoring the cars many years ago, the switch was in a sad state. I was able to get it together but it has never been 100%. I guess I will have to take the switch out and see if I can make sure it works. There must be a way to short it to try a jump start that would see if the coils fire. Quite frustrating as you can imagine.
I believe I have located the problem and it is with the switch. Without removing it and just poking around the coils started firing. So I probably have to remove it to check why the lights are not working and ensure the wires are secure. It is a little worrisome as you wouldn’t want to be out somewhere and have the issue.
Glad you found the problem. I occasionally have to remove the ignition switch on my '24 to clean the contacts with a wire brush. I also confirm that the nubs on the rotating part of the ignition switch are making firm contact with the metal divots on the stationary part.
Thanks for the advice. I took the switch apart; cleaned things up with steel wool and so far things seem to be working. Strange enough I found the lights somewhat worked. The right light would come on for the dim but not the bright. The left light would come on for the bright but not the dim. Must need replacing. I am not usually not out after dark so not a big problem.
I am thinking that I should have my coils checked and adjusted. I find starting the car, even in this warm weather takes some time. In cold weather it is almost impossible. Checking the spark plugs, I find they are black so the carburetor must be too rich but if I turn the choke too far it starts running rough.
